Tricks for harvesting down corn? - Red Power Magazine

It wasn't long ago I think maybe Boog and some of the others were talking about tricks to do to the combine to get up down corn.  Seems like someone said to coat the snouts of the head with spray graphite.  What else can one do to the cornhead/combine to help get the corn up?  The guy doing our picking has a corn reel he is going to attach before he starts back up.

thanks

Super A, I mentioned spraying metal snouts with slip-plate awhile back. It sure helped us a few years back when we had down dorn. I usually resprayed them every night when I finished for the day so they would be good & dry for the next day. Makes the head usgly as sin but who cares if it helps. Besides it will wear off fairly quick. Another thing you might try is hanging a chain from the rear axle & letting it drag the ground. It will help eliminate static electricity which will help prevent dust & such from sticking (use to die this all the time to help keep dusat off the windows).

I think Chadh mentioned using spray crisco on poly snouts. Another product that comes to mind is "Pam", a vegetable spray used to spray pans to keep food from sticking in them as it cooks. Mooma boog uses it in her catering business & it sure makes a difference. Would think it would help in down corn.

One last thing, don't know how much it helps but I have bolted small chain lengths to the crossauger flighting. They will make the auger more aggressive and help grab the trash. I used small links (just big enough to get a 1/4" bolt through) that are elongated. That way I could adjust them up & down to maintain clearance off the auger bed.

I have picked enough down corn to really feel for you. Just be careful and don't do something stupid. Once we had some really down corn and I was having Mooma boog run the combine & the hired man & I walked along each side of the head with pitchforks keeping the end snouts clear. I lost my grip on the fork and it went thru the snapping rolls handle first. When the metal end hit the stripper plates it shot up in the air a good 15' . That was the last of doing that. Luckily no one was hurt.

In a last ditch case I have used the grain platform. it will work but is tremdously hard on the combine as well as the head. it's unbelievable how much dirt you will run thru the combine & into the grain tank. If you do many acres you will at least be replacing the elevato chains & unloading augers. More than a 100 acres & you will probably want to trade the machine off.

Whatever you do just be carefull. No amount of corn is worth risking injury or possibly your life over
